The Crows

THE BOOK OF PROPHETS:
---------------------------

“Master, how is it you say that the Priests are corrupt, and then you called those who shall survive the great doom to come; both as crows? How are even we, your closest followers to know the difference?”
“Crows are the common foul of the air. This is the age of Men, for the Fay folk of yesterday are fading quickly from the world. Men are both righteous and wicked, how is it you are to know the difference on your own? That which you give yourself over to even unto you day of your death will be how you are known.” Watching a crane pass overhead, Nadan stated, “Know this, you have ears but let your heart listen and decern. It is Alno’ilmana who stands alone when at the end of time nothing exists. It is He alone who looks back on this, your very day, and knows the unfolding of all things. Men are like crows, but Alno alone knows the mind of each.”
This happened while passing the threshold of the southern gates of Mithar, where standing near the opened door, a stranger called to a Follower in the back of Nadan’s group, “You are no closer to any real answer, are you? Why do you listen to such convoluted nonsense from this bitter man?”
Upon hearing these whispered words, Nada turned about and faced the man directly, saying, “It is from your own view of experience that limits your eyes from seeing and ears from listening beyond your nose. Jaden, son of Marden of Legosh. Since, childhood you were harshly treated, even as a witness to your own mother’s beatings by your father’s cruel blows. Truth is, even now you do the same unto your own family. Would it not be a better question of why your bitterness persists?” Then looking at the bruised face of the boy beside his father, the Prophet Nadan added, “Jaden, Morden –do only what is right, or this child will do what was done to you and worst to others. What is the choice for your own life –that is the question for every crow that flies beneath heaven’s sky to answer for itself.” With that Nadan resumed his walk along the road to Kathos. A follower saw Jaden in a weeping embrace of his son.
